Our sports medicine physicians are trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat injuries. They specialize in non-surgical management, as many sports injuries can be treated non-operatively, and refer to surgeons when necessary.

Our Sports Medicine Physician Specialists

We have two dedicated and experienced sports medicine physicians, Dr. Christopher Johnston and Dr. Jacquelyn Corkum, who will see individuals of all ages including athletes, non-athletes and patients with work-related ailments.

Dr. Johnston
Dr. Johnson provides sport medicine, musculoskeletal consultations, and image guided injections for pain management of the shoulder, knee, hip and extremities at our downtown Halifax, Clayton Park, and Dartmouth locations.

Dr. Corkum
Dr. Corkum specializes in the assessment and treatment of acute and overuse injuries (e.g. sprains, strains, fractures, tendinopathies), as well as chronic musculoskeletal conditions (e.g. osteoarthritis). She will see athletes and non-athletes, patients with work related ailments and individuals of all ages, including children. She see patients at our Downtown Halifax, Clayton Park, and Dartmouth locations.

    Do I need a medical referral/prescription?

    Yes. If you need to see one of our sports medicine physicians a medical referral from your physician is required. This allows you to see the appropriate specialist at the right time, which can help to reduce wait times. Referrals from a family physician can be faxed to (902) 442-5625.
  • Do I need an appointment?

    Do I need an appointment?

    Once your medical referral form is submitted from your physician and reviewed an appointment will be booked accordingly. There are appointments available for acute injuries so please indicate on the referral if you would like your patient seen on an urgent basis.
  • Does provincial health care (MSI/Medicare) cover the costs at Arthritis & Injury Care Centre?

    Does provincial health care (MSI/Medicare) cover the costs at Arthritis & Injury Care Centre?

    We are a private company whose services are not covered by MSI or Medicare. Part or complete service and/or product costs are often covered under most insurance plans. At the Arthritis & Injury Care Centre we will help to obtain all coverage information for you and will bill directly any companies that allow it. This includes private insurance companies, Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB), Community Services, and more Appointments with our Orthopedic Consultants ARE covered by MSI/Medicare.
  • How do I know if my private insurance will cover the service and/or products?

    How do I know if my private insurance will cover the service and/or products?

    As a service to eliminate any confusion, the Arthritis and Injury Care Centre offers to contact your private insurance company, to find out all specific insurance coverage details on your behalf. If estimates are required by an insurance company, to determine coverage, an estimate will be sent at no charge. The Arthritis and Injury Care Centre will bill directly all insurance companies and policies that allow for this service. We will walk you all the way through this process either way.
